In South Africa Licorice is used to "make one talk nicely”. It is used to open communication and to relax the tongue. As an antibacterial and antiviral expectorant it is used for colds, dry coughs, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. demulcent property proves useful for heartburn, acid reflux, ulcers and inflammation of the mucous membranes. Licorcie is also used for indigestion and constiptation. Licorice is used for combating menopause symptoms and overall adrenal insufficiency. 
 
Contraindications: Licorice should not be used by those who have high blood pressure or water retention. Licorice can interact with medications for the heart such as blood thinners, high blood pressure medications and medications for heart rhythm. Licorice also interacts with drugs that lower potassium and diuretics. Licorice should not be used with corticosteroids and should not be used when taking hormones or in conjunction with hormone regulating medications.
