When the Work Feels Heavy: How to Keep Going as an Herbalist

Herbalism is a calling, a passion, and for many of us, a divine purpose.

But if we're honest—this work can also be emotionally draining. Between managing clients, growing a business, and nurturing our own families, the weight of helping others can feel overwhelming. If you’ve ever felt like you’re pouring from an empty cup, you’re not alone. Here’s how to navigate those heavy days and find balance through spiritual and personal care.

The Emotional Toll of Helping Others

As herbalists, we’re not just making blends or offering advice—we’re holding space for people’s pain, struggles, and healing journeys. That’s a beautiful responsibility, but it’s also a heavy one. You might feel like you’re carrying the weight of your clients’ problems, or like you’re never truly “off” because someone always needs help.

Why this happens:

  • Empathy overload: Herbalists often have big hearts, and it’s easy to absorb the

    emotions of those we help.

  • Unrealistic expectations: You might feel the pressure to have all the answers or fix every issue, which is simply impossible.

  • Neglecting self-care: In the busyness of serving others, it’s easy to forget your own needs.

How it shows up:

Fatigue, irritability, lack of creativity, or even resentment toward your work—these are all signs that you’re carrying more than you can handle.

How to Recharge Spiritually and Personally

When the work feels heavy, it’s a signal to refill your cup.

Here are ways to recharge so you can show up fully, both for yourself and those you serve.

  1. Reconnect with Your “Why”

    • Take time to remember why you started this journey. Was it to serve your community, honor your ancestors, or create a better life for your family? Reconnecting with your deeper purpose can reignite your passion and give you strength.

Actionable Step: Write down your mission and keep it visible in your workspace. On tough days, revisit it as a reminder of the bigger picture.

  2. Set Boundaries Without Guilt

    • You can’t pour into others if your own cup is empty. It’s okay to say no or reschedule when you’re feeling depleted. Boundaries don’t make you less compassionate—they make you more effective.

Actionable Step: Establish “office hours” for client work and stick to them. Create an autoresponder for emails to manage expectations and give yourself breathing room.

  3. Prioritize Spiritual Nourishment

    • Whether it’s prayer, meditation, or reading scripture, grounding yourself spiritually can provide the strength and clarity you need to move forward. Herbalism is as much about faith and connection as it is about plants.

Actionable Step: Dedicate a specific time each day to spiritually recharge, even if it’s just 5 minutes. Create a routine that centers and refreshes you.

  4. Lean on Your Community

    • Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. Whether it’s a fellow herbalist, a

trusted mentor, or a supportive friend, sharing your struggles can lighten the load.

Actionable Step: Join a group of like-minded herbalists or entrepreneurs who understand the unique challenges you face. Share openly and listen to others—it’s a healing exchange.

  5. Incorporate Restorative Practices

    • Just as you encourage your clients to care for themselves, make sure you’re doing the same. Rest, hydration, and nourishment aren’t luxuries—they’re essentials.

Actionable Step: Observe “Shabbat” or schedule a rest day to unplug completely. Use this time for activities that bring you joy, whether it’s journaling, walking in nature, or simply doing nothing.

The work of an herbalist is sacred, but it’s also demanding.

Remember, you’re human, and it’s okay to admit when you’re tired or overwhelmed. You can find balance and keep going by prioritizing spiritual grounding, setting boundaries, and seeking community—even when the work feels heavy.

You’re not in this alone. Lean into your faith, trust the process, and let yourself rest. You deserve it.
